GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Brown Scores 43 to Propel Ventura, 59-53

Ember Brown scored a game-high 43 points Saturday to help the Ventura High girls’ basketball team to a 59-53 overtime win over host Newbury Park in a Southern Section Division II-A quarterfinal.

Brown, who scored nine points in overtime, hit six of 12 shots from three-point range and made 13 of 14 from the free-throw line.

Carol McKeown had 11 points and 17 rebounds and Janim Halsey added 13 for Newbury Park (21-7). Ventura is 22-4.

Buena 64, Huntington Beach 60--Michelle Giordano and Amanda Falls hit two free throws each in the final 28 seconds to lift host Buena in a Division I-A quarterfinal.

Third-seeded Buena (21-2) led the entire game until Huntington Beach freshman guard Renee Kimoto hit two three-point shots in a row to tie the score, 60-60, with 45 seconds remaining.

But Giordano, a 6-foot junior forward, worked free for a shot 17 seconds later. Her attempt spun around the rim and fell out, but Giordano was fouled and hit both free throws. Falls added two free throws with 14 seconds left.

Hacienda Heights Wilson 53, Westlake 36--Shanon Sincock scored a team-high 10 points for Westlake (15-14), which could not overcome a 21-2 first-quarter deficit in a Division II-A quarterfinal game at Westlake.

Alemany 41, Estancia 29--Zevette Mitchell scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as Alemany (24-4) advanced to the Division III-AA semifinals.

Bell-Jeff 70, Sacred Heart of Jesus 33--Senior guard Lori Talley totaled 21 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and six steals, and Cathy Flores added 18 points and 13 rebounds for the visiting Guards (26-2) in a Division IV-A quarterfinal.

Village Christian 42, Rosamond 34--The Crusaders won their 14th conscutive game in a Division IV-A quarterfinal. Freshman forward Lindy James had 19 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks.
