PREP BASKETBALL REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Crenshaw Rolls Past Simi Valley

Crenshaw High broke open a close game against Simi Valley in the third quarter and went on to a 70-49 victory in a first-round Southern Regional State Tournament game at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday night.

Leading by 46-38 late in the third quarter, Crenshaw pulled away with a 14-4 run. It outscored the Pioneers, 22-9, during the fourth quarter.

Junior forward Tremaine Fowlkes led the Cougars with 19 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots. Junior center Kristaan Johnson added 14 points and six rebounds.

Simi Valley, which finished 25-6, was led led by Craig Griffin, who had 21 points.

Crenshaw (25-2) will play host to Huntington Beach in a regional semifinal Thursday night.

In other boys’ regional games:

Mario Aguirre scored on a layup with one second remaining in overtime, drew an intentional foul and sank both free throws to lead Hanford to a 70-66 upset of Long Beach Jordan in Division I. . . South Torrance built up leads of as great as 32 points on the way to a 72-56 Division III victory over San Diego University. . . Monte Marcaccini scored 25 points to lead Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, the Southern Section III-A champions, to a 70-59 Division III victory over San Diego St. Augustine.

Gardena Serra rolled past San Diego Clairemont, 112-45, taking a 62-21 halftime lead on the way to the Division IV victory. . . . Joe Giaconi scored a game-high 25 points to lead Palos Verdes Chadwick to a 64-50 victory over Sante Fe Christian in Division V. . . Donminic Ellison scored 19 points and Stais Boseman added 18 to help Inglewood Morningside to a 80-61 Division III victory over Exeter.

In girls’ regional games:

Forwards Julie Hardy and Michelle Giordano each scored 20 points to lead Buena to a 53-44 victory over Clovis in Division I. . . Cathy Flores had 17 points and 18 rebounds as Bell-Jeff defeated Woodlake, 56-42, in Division IV. . . Julie Bouma scored 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Cerritos Valley Christian past Yosemite, 68-39, in Division IV. . . Olympia Scott had 19 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots as St. Bernard won a Division IV game, 90-46, over San Diego Lincoln Prep.
