Jones Named Division I State Player of Year

Marion Jones of Thousand Oaks High was named Division I state player of the year in girls’ basketball by Cal-Hi Sports, topping the list of area players who made the all-state team.

Jones, a senior forward who will attend North Carolina on a basketball/track scholarship, averaged 22.8 points and 14.2 rebounds for the Lancers, who were No. 1 in the state for much of the season.

She was edged in the voting for state player of the year in all divisions by Danielle Viglione of Fair Oaks Del Campo, but was a member of the all-state first team for all divisions.

Shaneya Harris of Kennedy and Kim Schielke of Palmdale were named to the all-state third team, and Buena’s Michelle Giordano joined Jones, Harris and Schielke on the all-state Division I team.

Jamie Arundell of Fillmore and Lori Talley of Bell-Jeff were all-state Division IV selections.

Alemany’s Samantha Rigley and Ventura’s Ember Brown made the sophomore all-state team and Buena’s Eboni Conley was named state freshman of the year.

Senior forward Monte Marcaccini and senior guard Craig Johnson of Notre Dame High were named first-team selections on the All-Southern Section Division III boys’ basketball team.

Marcaccini and Johnson led the Knights to the Division III-A title, the first section title in school history. Marcaccini, who will attend Indiana, averaged 19.7 points. Johnson averaged 13.4.

Tom Stillwell of Notre Dame was a second-team selection. David Craig of St. Francis and Micah Hanson of Moorpark also were second-team selections. Stais Boseman of Morningside was named player of the year.

In Division IV, Brian Clark of Santa Clara and David Fennell of Village Christian were first-team picks. Fennell averaged 20.3 points and Clark averaged 17.7.

Jeff Luderer of Crespi, Mark Sebek of Nordhoff and Dave Varela of Santa Clara were second-team selections in Division IV.
