COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Saddleback’s Lee Comes In to Shut Down Fresno City

Saddleback opened the Visalia baseball tournament by defeating defending State champion Fresno City, 5-2, Wednesday in Fresno.

Relief pitcher Steve Lee, who took over in the seventh, struck out four and didn’t allow a hit to earn the save for Saddleback.

Scott Holty went two for three with three RBIs for Saddleback. Neil Garcia and Bo Haley, who both doubled in the first, went two for five. Haley had an RBI in the first. Fresno is 20-10.

In the second round Saddleback defeated DeAnza, 6-2, to improve its record to 19-8. DeAnza (24-6) had a 14-game winning streak ended.

In other Visalia tournament games:

Fullerton 7, Orange Coast 2--George Velasquez, who allowed two runs and six hits in 8 2/3 innings, earned the victory for host Fullerton in the second round. Fullerton (13-14), the only team entering the tournament with a losing record, won its first two games. Orange Coast is 16-11.

Fullerton 4, College of the Sequoias 3--Second baseman Brent Lacher reached base on a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Erickson Dumaual to clinch the first-round victory for Fullerton (12-14) in the top of the seventh. College of the Sequoias is 17-14.

Orange Coast 16, Monterey Peninsula 0--Paul McDaniels, who went one for three, got Orange Coast off to a good start with a two-run home run in the first inning. Aaron Weiss, who went three for three with four RBIs, hit two singles and a home run for Orange Coast (16-10) in the first round. Monterey Peninsula is 15-9.

In the Channel Coast tournament:

Rancho Santiago 8, Moorpark 3--Steve Dowding (4-1) struck out four and walked two in seven innings to earn the second-round victory for Rancho Santiago. Matt Kastalic, who went two for five, drove in two runs with a triple in the fifth for the Dons (21-5). Ryan Andersen had two hits and two RBIs.

In the Hancock tournament:

Cypress 7, San Jose 3--Kevin Clark and Greg Tippin each had three hits and one RBI and Josh Kliner had two hits and an RBI for Cypress in the first round. Pat Simec (5-3) went the distance, allowing nine hits for the Chargers (19-11).

In the College of the Desert softball tournament:

Fullerton 3, San Diego Mesa 2 (8 innings)--Delanie Jesson singled up the middle to score the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth for Fullerton (19-7) in the first-round game.
