Gomes’ Lawsuit Might Be Dismissed

A lawsuit by fired Thousand Oaks High assistant football coach Paul Gomes against the Conejo Valley Unified School District will be dismissed in Ventura Superior Court unless Gomes can show by April 28 why the suit should go forward.

Judge Edwin Osborne ruled Thursday that Gomes, who was fired last November over an incident in which he allegedly cursed a player during practice, must prove the incident was not the reason for his dismissal.

Gomes declined to be specific about his next move but did say he is confident he will prove the incident was not the reason for his termination. Gomes’ attorney, Raymond Clayton of Thousand Oaks, was out of town Friday and could not be reached for comment.

Gomes, 34, a 1977 graduate of Thousand Oaks and 14-year Lancer assistant, left with two games to play last season, prompting parents, players and former players to call for his reinstatement.

School administrators originally said the coach left to pursue a master’s degree. Gomes filed suit a month later, claiming he was forced to resign.
