Crucial CCAA Series Awaits Dominguez Hills

Cal State Dominguez Hills, in the hunt for the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball title, will play a three-game series against Cal State San Bernardino today and Saturday.

The teams will meet at 3:30 p.m. today at San Bernardino and play a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday in Carson.

Dominguez Hills (24-18, 10-9 in conference) is battling front-running Cal Poly Pomona (11-8), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (9-8), UC Riverside (9-7) and San Bernardino (21-18-1, 10-11) for the league title.

Dominguez Hills, which defeated Westmont, 5-2, on Wednesday, has been led by first baseman Greg Bergeron, who is batting .390. Designated hitter Ariel Martin is batting .361 and has four home runs and 30 runs batted in.

Starter Scott Veeder is 4-4 with a 2.71 earned-run average and four complete games. He has given up only eight walks in 63 innings.

Dominguez Hills will play host to nonconference opponents Southern California College at 3 p.m. Monday and Loyola Marymount at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The Loyola Marymount baseball team will travel to Santa Clara for a three-game series against the Broncos today and Saturday.

The teams will meet at 2:30 p.m. today and play a doubleheader at noon Saturday.

The Lions (18-24, 10-8) are in third place in the conference, four games behind first-place Pepperdine.

Santa Clara won three games against the Lions in Westchester. Santa Clara (18-22-1, 7-11) is led by infielders Lou Donati, who is batting .341, and Nick Mirizzi, who is batting .328.

The Lions, who have won three of four games, have been led by outfielder Mike Peters, who is batting .352, and first baseman Anthony Napolitano, who is batting .313. Designated hitter Jesse Ibarra is batting .298 and leads the conference with 12 home runs.

Freshman starter Ryan Graves is 5-2 with a 3.69 ERA. Guard Greg Walker of Loyola is among 10 players named to the 1992-93 West Coast Conference all-academic men’s basketball team.

Walker, a 5-foot-11 senior who made the academic team for the second season in a row, majors in economics and has a 3.27 grade-point average. A reserve for the Lions, he averaged 1.8 points last season.

Steve Clover of Pepperdine, a 6-4 junior guard from Rancho Palos Verdes who averaged 1.8 points last season, also made the team. Clover is a business major who has a 3.84 GPA--the highest on the squad.

Pepperdine forward Steve Guild and center Derek Noether also were named to the team.

Deon Evans, an assistant boys’ basketball coach and track coach at Serra High during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons, has been named boys’ basketball coach at Pius X.

Evans, who graduated from Serra in 1980, was also an assistant basketball coach at Pius X for eight seasons.
