COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Orange Coast Women, Golden West Men Lead State Meet

The Orange Coast women’s swim team and the Golden West men’s team continued to dominate Friday, the second of three days at the State championship meet at Hartnell College in Salinas.

Orange Coast’s Brandi Kossub set a national record in the 50 backstroke (27.56 seconds) in the morning preliminaries and won the event in the evening in 27.56.

Orange Coast’s 400 freestyle relay team of Kristine Hansen, Deborah Baham, Amy Apgar and Michelle Quigley set a State record, winning in 3:35.99.

Also for OCC: Baham won the 200 individual medley (2:13.07), and Sharon Claremont won the 50 butterfly (27.17). The Pirates, who have won four consecutive State titles, have 333 points. Cuesta (262) is in second.

Stephaine Kramer of Golden West won the 50 breaststroke (31.63).

The Golden West men’s team won five of eight events to take a commanding lead. The Rustlers have 492 points. Orange Coast (246) is in second.

Alex Beaver of Golden West won the 400 individual relay (4:03.98). Also winning for Golden West were: Jason Steinhauser in the 100 butterfly (51.52) and Todd McClung in the 100 breaststroke (56.90).

Bob Sala, McClung, Steinhauser, and Chris Koerner won the 200 medley relay (1:34.23) and Rafael Guijarro, Beaver, Sean Lemm, and Beau McCarney won the 800 freestyle in 6:52.12 also for Golden West.

David Beck of Saddleback won the one-meter diving with 434.90 points.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Orange Coast 1, Rancho Santiago 0 (9 innings)--Jill Bishop pitched a one-hitter for her seventh shutout of the season and scored the winning run for host Orange Coast (22-13, 14-6). Bishop scored on a single by Stephani Ritchey.

In the Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis tournament:

Saddleback dominates--Saddleback advanced three players to the singles semifinals and both doubles teams to the finals today at Saddleback.

Trent Burns of Golden West is the only non-Gaucho left in the tournament. He plays Max Alvarez, and Erik Berg takes on Nils Schyllander at 9 a.m. today in the singles semis. The final is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

Schyllander and Alvarez play teammates Danny Wood and Steen Lundblad in the doubles final at 2 p.m.

In the Orange Empire Conference women’s tennis championships:

Amy Cook and Toowee Cao of Orange Coast, seeded sixth in doubles, beat the top-seeded team, Michelle Mateljian and Shannon Curren of Riverside, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals and fourth-seeded Makiko Suwa and Jocelyn Jesperson of Saddleback, 6-1, 7-5, in the semifinals to advance to today’s final at Irvine Valley.

Cook and Cao play Curren and Fiona Jones in the final at 1 p.m. The singles semifinals are at 9 a.m.; the final is a 11 a.m.
