PREP ROUNDUP : Mission Viejo Boys Gain a Share of League Tennis Title

The Mission Viejo boys’ tennis team beat Dana Hills, 11-7, Tuesday at Dana Hills, clinching at least a tie for the South Coast League title. It was the Diablos’ first league title in boys’ tennis in 23 years.

Mission Viejo (12-5, 7-2) swept its singles sets. Bill Casas won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1; Khalid Husseini won, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4, and Brian Gruner, won 6-1, 6-2, 6-3.

Dana Hills is 6-3 in league.

In another South Coast League match:

Mater Dei 10, Capistrano Valley 8--Freshman Bret Hankey (6-3, 6-1, 6-3), sophomore Paul Kerwin (6-2, 6-1, 6-1) and junior Miles Simon (7-5, 6-4, 6-0) each swept in singles to lead host Mater Dei (3-6 in league) to the upset of Capistrano Valley (5-4 in league).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 13, Laguna Hills 5--Sophomore Nolan Cooper won his singles sets, 6-0, 7-5, 6-4, and Romit Shah and Mario Mikula led a Trabuco Hills doubles sweep (6-2, 6-4, 6-1) for the visiting Mustangs (17-2, 8-1).

In the Freeway League girls’ swimming preliminaries:

Lewczyk sets record--Troy’s Caroline Lewczyk set a league record in the 100-yard breaststroke Tuesday, finishing in 1 minute 7.80 seconds. Lewczyk broke the mark of 1:07.89 set by Fullerton’s Andrea Reed in 1991.

In the Orange League golf finals:

Woods leading--Tiger Woods shot an eight-under 64 at Long Beach Recreation Park, giving him a two-day total of 134, 10 under par, with one round remaining.

In Sunset League golf:

Marina 259, Edison 293--Paul Ohshima and Brian Rea were even par, which was 49 for 12 holes at SeaCliff, as Marina (10-1 in league) clinched the league title.

In Garden Grove League golf:

Pacifica 216, Los Amigos 220--Jeremy Marquez shot one-over 37 at Old Ranch for Pacifica (10-2, 6-0), which clinched its first league title. Los Amigos is 4-2 in league.
