Irvine Coach Mark Mednick saw the Vaqueros’ Sea View League championship slipping away Tuesday when Corona del Mar took a 2-1 lead with easy 15-4, 15-8 victories, so he let his team have it during the break. “Our coach was pretty upset and he told us we weren’t going to win league,” Wakeham said. “The next two games we pounded them.” Irvine won, 15-5, 15-7, and Wakeham did most of the pounding, finishing with 39 kills. Friday, Wakeham had 22 kills and four blocks in Irvine’s three-game sweep of Newport Harbor--the only league team to beat the Vaqueros--that clinched the league title. Wakeham said the Vaqueros’ team-play came together against the Sailors, who had swept Irvine in the first meeting. “The passing by our other players was incredible,” he said.
