Steve Park, a senior at San Marino High, has been selected as one of two California Interscholastic Federation scholar athlete of the year award winners.

Park, a Times’ All-San Gabriel Valley football player and a member of San Marino’s defending Southern Section champion baseball team, was selected from 535 applicants for the award, which recognizes outstanding performance in the classroom and on the playing field.

Park has a 4.46 grade-point average and is a National Merit Scholarship finalist. He and girls’ winner Betty Ann Boeving of Monte Vista High in Danville will be honored June 5 at the CIF track and field championships at Cerritos College.

Yuko Takenaka of San Marino was one of 10 girls finalists and Kenneth Westover of Claremont was among 10 boys finalists for the award.

Two-time defending national champion Cal Poly Pomona finished third last weekend at the NCAA Division II women’s tennis championships at the Industry Hills Sheraton Resort.

UC Davis won the title by defeating Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the championship match.

Steve Kobald, Oscar Mancisidor, Gary Sinclair and Phong Nguyen of Pomona will compete Monday in the Division II men’s championships at Edmund, Okla.

The Azusa Pacific baseball team, ranked fifth in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics, will play host to the four-team District 3 playoffs today through Saturday.

Top-seeded Azusa Pacific (33-7-1) plays fourth-seeded The Master’s College (28-20), and second-seeded Southern California College (28-22) plays Point Loma Nazarene (32-17-1) in the semifinals.

The winner of the district title advances to the four-team area playoffs May 20-22 in either Oregon or Southern Idaho. The winner of area championship advances to the NAIA World Series at Des Moines, Iowa, May 28-30.

The La Verne University softball team begins play Friday in a three-team NCAA Division III regional at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.

Second-seeded La Verne (28-8) plays third-seeded Cal Lutheran (25-9-1) on Friday with the loser facing Buena Vista of Iowa (29-6) in the double-elimination tournament.

The winner of the regional advances to the six-team Division III championships May 20-23 at Millikin University (Iowa).

Azusa Pacific’s softball team concluded its season with consecutive defeats in the District 3 playoffs at Southern California College.

The Cougars lost to Cal Baptist, 9-0, and SCC, 2-0, to finish 37-15.

The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team is waiting to see if it will earn a berth in the NCAA Division II West Regional May 20-23.

The Broncos (28-25, 16-14 in California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play) finished second in the conference behind Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (31-16, 17-10). San Luis Obispo and UC Davis have earned automatic berths in the regional.

Pomona, Cal State Stanislaus and Sonoma State are candidates for the third spot in the regional. The NCAA selection committee will make its choice Sunday night.

The Dodger-Cincinnati Reds game on May 19 will be broadcast in Chinese on KAZN (1300 AM).

It will be the first Dodger game broadcast in Chinese in the United States. The game will also be broadcast in English, Spanish and Korean.

The city of Azusa is sponsoring summer youth basketball leagues for boys and girls ages 13-15.

Practices and games will take place at the Memorial Park Recreation Center gymnasium weekday afternoons and evenings.

The Challengers Angling Club is seeking fisherman interested in joining the organization, which was established in 1953.

The club sponsors trips once a month from February through October, and meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month for dinner and a program at Covina Bowl in Covina.

The 1993 Senior Olympics, featuring competition for men and women in 19 events, will be staged June 5-19 in Pasadena.

Participants 50 and older are eligible to compete in track and field, race walking and walking, swimming, golf, tennis, cycling, softball, lawn bowling, bowling, basketball and ice skating. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each age division and winners will qualify for the state championships that will be contested in San Diego in September.

The Pasadena Games also will include race walking and tennis for handicapped athletes, and non-athletic competitions in chess, bridge and ballroom dancing.
