The Marshall boys’ tennis team continued to roll toward its third consecutive City Section 3-A Division championship with a first-round victory Monday over Washington.

The Barristers are 46-1 over three seasons and are 13-0 this year. They played Kennedy on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

Senior Arthur Tombakian has lost only two sets in three years. Senior Manuel Gil-Goodman, sophomore Sebastian Albelais and senior Thomas Chun are also unbeaten in singles this season.

Diego Albelais and Alex Lee are unbeaten in doubles.

Marshall and Eagle Rock advanced to the semifinals of the City 3-A boys’ volleyball playoffs with impressive quarterfinal victories Friday.

Top-seeded Marshall defeated Monroe in three games in the quarterfinals and beat Garfield on Tuesday. The Barristers will play Fairfax in Friday’s championship match at Pepperdine’s Firestone Fieldhouse.

Eagle Rock advanced to its first semifinal appearance with a five-game upset of third-seeded Van Nuys. The Eagles lost to Fairfax on Tuesday.

Four Glendale-area boys’ volleyball teams will open play in the Southern Section playoffs Friday.

In Division I, Crescenta Valley, which finished third in the Pacific League, travels to Bay League champion Santa Monica. Glendale, an at-large team from the Pacific League, plays at San Marcos, the second-place finisher in the Channel League.

In Division III, Glendale Academy, the No. 3 team from the Alpha League, plays at Bishop Amat, the No. 2 team from the Del Rey League. Flintridge Prep, the No. 3 team from the Liberty League, plays at Del Rey League champion St. John Bosco.

Nada Kawar of Crescenta Valley and Cori Sue Miller of Hoover were among 10 finalists for the California Interscholastic Federation scholar athlete of the year award.

Kawar was an All-Southern Section basketball player and is also an outstanding track and field athlete. Miller is one of the Southern Section’s most versatile swimmers.

Betty Ann Boeving of Monte Vista High in Danville was the girls’ winner. Steve Park of San Marino was the boys’ winner.

The Crescenta Valley boys’ swim team won the Pacific League championship Friday, defeating Glendale and Hoover by 254 points.

Sprinter John Jenkins won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events for the Falcons and was named co-athlete of the meet along with Cori Sue Miller of Hoover and Lanna Stacey of Arcadia.

Miller won the 200 freestyle and the 100 breast stroke for the Hoover girls’ team, which finished second to Arcadia.

Muir High won the Pacific League track and field championship, but there were several notable performances by Glendale-area athletes at the league finals.

Margarito Casillas of Hoover won the 3,200 meters in a league-record 9 minutes 14.29 seconds. Casillas also won the 1,600 in 4:16.76.

Nada Kawar of Crescenta Valley won the girls’ discus with a league-record mark of 124-feet-10. She also won the shot put with a throw of 41-9 1/2.

Crescenta Valley also got first-place performances from high jumper Martin Hilke (6-6), discus thrower Victor Huezo (142-10) and pole vaulter Jon Berg (13-6).

Rhaina Echols of Glendale won the girls’ 1,600 (5:26.98) and the 3,200 (11:46.08).

Rae Ho of Glendale won the Pacific League boys’ tennis championship with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tom Pope of Arcadia.

Ho qualified for next week’s Southern Section tournament.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Six Glendale College track athletes qualified for the Southern California finals Saturday at Long Beach with their performances at the Southern California prelims at Cerritos College.

Robert Nelson and Luis Jacobo qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and Carlos Guerra qualified in the javelin.

America Rivas qualified in the women’s 5,000, and Margarita Renteria qualified in the 1,500. Allison Oliver qualified in the javelin and discus.

The Glendale College (18-20, 13-17 in the Western State Conference) baseball team concluded its season with losses to Bakersfield and Ventura.

Lance Evans hit a three-run home run for Glendale in the Vaqueros’ 9-4 loss to Bakersfield. Evans also drove in a run in the 7-3 loss to Ventura.

Registration is open for Vaquero basketball camps run by Glendale Coach Brian Beauchemin that will be staged June 28-July 2 and Aug. 2-6.

COLLEGES

Track and field enthusiasts were treated to some outstanding performances last weekend during the 10th annual Occidental Invitational.

Wander Moura of Brazil won the men’s 3,000 steeplechase in 8:26.65, the second-fastest time in the world this year.

Olympian Donna Mayhew, a former standout at Crescenta Valley High, won the women’s javelin with a toss of 205-7, the best mark in the United States this year.

Claudette Groenendaal won the women’s 1,500 in 4:10.21, the best time in the United States this year.

Olympic gold medalist Steve Lewis won the 400 in 45.69. Ramona Pagel won the shot put with a throw of 59 feet 6 1/4 inches, the second-best mark in the United States this year.

Gunnar Miller of Occidental broke the school record in the pole vault with a mark of 17-4 3/4, eclipsing the record of 16-8 set by Andy Steben in 1969.

Konstantine Kinderich ran a personal-best 3:46.67 in the men’s 1,500, and Jose Garcia ran a personal-best 14:28.21 in the 5,000.

Miller, Kinderich, Garcia and Becky Kopchick will compete in the NCAA Division II track and field championships May 26-29 at Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio.

Carmen Arreola, a freshman infielder for the Occidental softball team, was selected All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by league coaches.

Arreola batted .400 for the Tigers, who finished 6-25-1.

Jill Normington, a junior outfielder who batted .385, was selected to the second team.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Margarito Casillas, Hoover--Casillas, a senior, won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events at the Pacific League championships at Arcadia High.

Casillas’ time of 9:14.29 broke the Pacific League record by seven seconds. Casillas clocked 4:16.76 in the 1,600, narrowly missing another league record.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Gunnar Miller, Occidental--Miller, a former standout at Hoover High, set a school record in the pole vault during the Occidental Invitational.

Miller’s mark of 17-4 3/4 broke the record of 16-8 set by Andy Steben in 1969.

MISCELLANY

A golf tournament sponsored by the Chambers of Commerce in La Canada-Flintridge, Montrose-Verdugo City and Crescenta Valley will be played May 24 at the La Canada-Flintridge Country Club.
