SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Woodbridge Runs Circles Around Costa Mesa, Wins

Alison Johnsen stole four bases, including three in one inning, and scored two runs as top-seeded Woodbridge beat visiting Costa Mesa, 5-0, Friday in the first round of the Southern Section Division III softball playoffs.

Corey Washington (17-4) struck out five and gave up only an infield single in the fourth for the Warriors (24-5), who play Glendora in Tuesday’s second round.

Costa Mesa finishes 12-9.

In other Division III play:

Irvine 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Alleah Poulson drove in the first run with a single and had two hits for host Irvine (23-5). Rebecca Smith (16-4) struck out 11, and pitched her 13th shutout. The Vaqueros advance to play Torrance.

Laguna Hills 7, Newport Harbor 3--Misty Thompson had three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs for Laguna Hills (20-5). Windy Scofield allowed five hits and one walk for the Hawks, who play Riverside Ramona Tuesday.

Newport Harbor finished 15-9.

In Division V:

Southern California Christian 1, Moreno Valley Rancho Verde 0--Candle Silva pitched her sixth no-hitter, striking out 16 for SCC (19-2).

The winning run came after Jessica Clarke reached and stole second and third and scored on a throwing error. SCC plays Cerritos Valley Christian Tuesday.

Whittier Christian 4, Cerritos Whitney 3--Monique Galaviz drove in two with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to lift host Whittier Christian (10-10), which now plays Murietta Valley. Monet Moore (14-6) pitched a one-hitter.

La Canada Flintridge Prep 1, Brethren Christian 0--Christy Bornfeld scored in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch. Brethren Christian ended at 13-9.

In Division VI:

Liberty Christian 21, Harbor City Gateway Christian 10--Linlee Vaccaro had three hits, two RBIs and scored two runs for host Liberty Christian (12-5), which will play Woodcrest Christian.

St. Margaret’s 16, Salton City West Shores 0--Monica Arreola pitched a no-hitter, striking out 10 for St. Margaret’s (7-7), which scored 13 runs in the first. They face Temecula Linfield Tuesday.
