BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Davis Is Tardy, Misses a Start

Outfielder Eric Davis was a late scratch from the lineup Sunday after he apparently had personal business that delayed his arrival to Three Rivers Stadium.

After originally posting Davis as the starter in left field, Manager Tom Lasorda inserted Mitch Webster into the lineup.

Davis entered the game in the top of the eighth inning as a pinch-runner and stole second and third, his 32nd and 33rd consecutive stolen bases without getting caught.

That places him tied for third on the all-time list. He also stole 33 in a row in 1988.

Cory Snyder shrugs when he is asked if his strong play since taking Darryl Strawberry’s place in right field plus the Dodgers’ hot streak makes him a candidate to keep the job permanently.

“I hope so,” Snyder said. “I feel that way. I’m going out there, playing hard every day, giving 100% and we’ll see what happens in five or six days.”

Snyder hit his first home run of the season Saturday night and added two more singles Sunday. He has posted a .333 average (20 for 60) in the last 18 games.

Strawberry hit a home run and a double in three at-bats Sunday in his third game with the Dodgers’ triple-A team at Albuquerque.
