1993 PREP BASEBALL / LOS ANGELES TIMES ALL-STARS : Beverly Hills’ Booth and Crossroads’ Condon Lead Class of 1993 : Times’ team: Norman junior is the player of the year, and Roadrunner senior is pitcher of year. Hollywood’s Raul Grijalva is the coach of the year.

Beverly Hills’ Jeremy Booth does not fit the image of a short, squatty catcher. In fact, during the 1993 season, Booth grew an inch and lost 15 pounds.

He also grew as a baseball player.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound junior was the Westside’s best hitter in 1993, leading his team in five offensive categories, including batting average.

For his efforts, Booth has been named The Times’ Westside Player of the Year.

Richard Condon of Crossroads was selected the pitcher of the year, and Hollywood’s Raul Grijalva, who turned around a struggling program, was selected coach of the year.

Booth had 17 hits in his first 23 at-bats--including two home runs and 20 runs batted in--for a .739 average. After seven games, he had a hit and RBI in every game.

Booth helped the Normans (18-6-1) to the Ocean League title with a 9-3 record.

“He was the best player around,” Beverly Hills Coach Bill Erickson said. “The most important thing I can say about him was that he grew tremendously as a player and as a person.”

Condon was a four-year starting pitcher and shortstop at Crossroads. He was selected by the Dodgers in last week’s amateur draft and is being recruited by several Division I schools.

Condon was named the Delphic League most valuable player twice and was co-MVP in 1993.

“He was probably the best all-around player we ever had here,” Roadrunner Coach Chuck Ice said. “I expect him to play well either at the college level or professionally.”

The quality of baseball has often been knocked at the City 3-A Division level, but what Grijalva did at Hollywood was just short of remarkable.

He started his rebuilding effort in 1991 with sophomores and guided the team to a second-place finish in the Northeastern League. The Sheiks won the league title the past two years and lost to Crenshaw in the 3-A semifinals last Thursday.

Here is a look at The Times’ Westside all-star team.

Dion Battee, St. Bernard

The sophomore right fielder hit two two-run home runs, the second in the seventh inning to beat Crespi, 6-5, for the Vikings’ only Mission League win. He finished with a .403 average, two triples, seven home runs, 22 runs batted in and seven stolen bases.

Jeremy Booth, Beverly Hills

Voted most valuable player of the Ocean League, the catcher led the team in home runs (five), runs batted in (45), walks (24), batting average (.562), and on-base average (.703). As a catcher, he had 93 putouts, 12 assists and one error in 106 fielding attempts.

Carlos Casillas, St. Monica

The sophomore first baseman was voted St. Monica’s most valuable player. He batted .537 with five home runs, 40 RBIs and 20 runs scored. Casillas also was named to the Camino Real League’s first team.

Josh Casillas, Santa Monica

The senior outfielder batted .415 in Bay League play and .448 for the season. He led the team in home runs (two), hits (30), RBIs (24) and stolen bases (11). He was named to the Bay League first team.

Marvin Cobos, Hollywood

The senior pitcher-shortstop, who was named to The Times’ Westside team in 1992, batted .500 and had a 0.48 earned-run average. He had a 10-3 record, including a loss to Crenshaw in the City 3-A semifinals--the only game he lost as a starter. He had a 22-game hitting streak and was named co-MVP of the Northern Conference.

Richard Condon, Crossroads

The senior pitcher-shortstop batted .486 with 10 doubles, four triples, three home runs, 26 stolen bases and 34 runs. He had a 7-1 record, four saves and a 2.76 earned-run average in 53 1/3 innings. He was selected most valuable player of the Delphic League as a freshman and junior and co-MVP last season.

Mike Hughes, Culver City

Voted to the All-Ocean League first team, the senior pitched 53 1/3 innings, giving up 13 earned runs for a 1.71 earned-run average. He had a 4-3 record with 21 strikeouts and 14 walks. Hughes was an outstanding fielder at third base and batted .361 with five doubles, a home run, 12 RBIs and 21 walks.

Doug Jarvis, University

Jarvis made The Times’ Westside team and the Western League team for the second consecutive year. The senior pitcher-first baseman batted .402 with six home runs and 33 RBIs. He expects to continue his career at UCLA as a non-scholarship player.

Jose Martinez, Westchester

The senior shortstop was most valuable player in the Western League. He batted .383 and led the Comets in RBIs (35) and stolen bases (43). He was an outstanding fielder and has a good arm. He is being recruited by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, USC and Loyola Marymount.

Jeremy Milken, Brentwood

The senior center fielder was the heart and soul of the Eagles’ batting order and a reason Brentwood reached the Division V quarterfinals, their best finish in school history. He batted .448 and set school records for home runs (11) and RBIs (44). He was voted co-MVP of the Delphic League. Milken, who has a 3.4 grade-point average, will attend Wharton School of Business at Penn University.

Mike Morales, Venice

Morales was a second-team selection to The Times’ Westside team in 1992. The senior outfielder batted .386, drove in 21 runs and scored 15. He also was voted to the Western League team.

Leonard Weathersby, Hamilton

The senior outfielder helped lead the Yankees to the Metro League title. A role player in 1992, Weathersby improved his batting stroke in the off-season. He batted .556 with nine home runs, 40 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. His most impressive statistic was seven home runs in seven consecutive games. Weathersby, who has a 3.3 GPA, is being recruited by USC and Cal State Los Angeles.
