SPORTSCOPE : Mira Costa, North Torrance Volleyball Players Are Honored

Three players from Ocean League champion Mira Costa High and two from Pioneer League champion North Torrance have been selected to All-Southern Section volleyball teams by a coaches’ panel.

Middle blocker Chris Walmer and outside hitter Matt Walker of Mira Costa were named to the Division I first team. Mustang setter Zane Smythe was named to the second team.

Eric Seiffert of runner-up Captistrano Valley was named Division I player of the year.

North outside hitter Robert Morgan was chosen to the Division II first team and teammate Jared Meyer, a middle blocker, was a third-team selection.

Paul Nihipali of champion Esperanza of Anaheim was named Division II player of the year.

All of the aforementioned players are seniors.

Six area seniors are expected to compete in the first Catholic High School All-Star Football Game at 7 p.m. Saturday at La Mirada High.

The local players, who are all playing for the South team, include lineman Steve Buether, running back-linebacker Joe Henderson and tight end Chris Bowman of St. Bernard, running back-defensive back Kenny Fredieu of Serra, and lineman Angel Ahumada and wide receiver Rich Catipon of Bishop Montgomery.

Norm Lacy of St. Monica will coach the South team.

Four players from the Harbor College baseball team have been named to the community college All-America first team and two others made the second team.

First baseman Tristan Paul, shortstop Grant Hohman, center fielder Rolando Avila and designated hitter David Rosato were selected to the first team.

Second-team selections were catcher Jeff Poor and relief pitcher Mark Chavez.

The six players were also selected to the all-state and All-Southern California teams. Harbor, which won the South Coast Conference title, finished 32-11 and reached the Southern California regional finals.

David Kintas, a water polo and swimming standout at Miraleste High in Rancho Palos Verdes and the University of Arizona in the 1970s, has been named water polo and women’s swimming coach at Loyola Marymount.

Kintas, who succeeds Doug Pitts, was a graduate assistant swimming coach at Stanford the past two years. He also was swimming and water polo coach for 12 years at Amphitheater High in Tucson, where his boys and girls swimming teams had a combined record of 218-24 and his water polo team was 170-72-2.

Kintas was a prep All-American in swimming and water polo in 1971 at Miraleste.

Ellie Takahashi, a 10-year-old from Torrance, won the all-around competition for youths 9 to 11 at the United States Gymnastics Federation’s Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., this month.

Takahashi, a fifth-grader at Lincoln Elementary School in Torrance, finished first in the rope and ribbon competitions and second in the floor exercise. She also won state and regional titles earlier this year.
