Valery Calkins of Thousand Oaks High won two events in meet record time at the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Assn. Championships in Indianapolis last weekend. She won the 200-yard freestyle in a meet record 1 minute 49.90 seconds, touching well ahead of Michelle Jesperson of Wisconsin.

Her meet record in the 500 freestyle was 4:49.52, 1.10 seconds ahead of runner-up Leslie Mix of Washington. The NISCA meet is an annual gathering of the top senior high school swimmers in the country.

Baseball

Right-hander Eddie Hernandez of Bishop Amat High said Thursday that he has signed a national letter of intent to play at Cal State Northridge.

Hernandez, 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, was 12-1 with an 0.49 earned-run average this spring for the Lancers. In 84 innings, he recorded 87 strikeouts with only 14 walks. He was the Del Rey League’s most valuable player.

Hernandez said former Bishop Amat and Northridge pitcher Kenny Kendrena influenced his decision to sign with the Matadors instead of Nevada or Fresno State.

“I like the way Coach (Bill) Kernen is with the players,” Hernandez said. “Also, I like the way they don’t carry many players or pitchers. As a freshman, it means I get to pitch right away.”

Hernandez subscribes to Kernen’s complete-game philosophy.

“Once I start something I like to be able to finish it,” he said.
