Drake Continues Midget Mastery at Ventura With Wire-to-Wire Win

In the first USAC Midget race at Ventura Raceway in nearly two months, Jay Drake of Val Verde scored a wire-to-wire victory over Walt Johnson of Sun Valley Saturday night in the semi-main.

Drake also won the most recent Midget main event at Ventura on May 8.

Nearly every race was marred by numerous yellow flags because of spinouts and crashes.

Midget racing legend Sleepy Tripp of Costa Mesa won a 10-lap heat race when several racers collided, clearing the path to victory.

Doug Philpott won both the California Dwarf Car 15-lap main event and the semi-main. Dale Hogan was second in the main.
