Crespi’s Suppan Named Division I Player of the Year

Right-hander Jeff Suppan of Crespi High has added Southern Section Division I player of the year to his many accolades.

Suppan, who led the Celts to the section semifinals, also was named Mission League player of the year and Times Valley player of the year. He was 11-1 with an 0.92 earned-run average and hit .480 with 11 home runs and 51 runs batted in.

Thousand Oaks first baseman Clint Harris, Simi Valley catcher Kevin Nykoluk, Hoover catcher Nate Dishington, Simi Valley third baseman Ryan Hankins, Simi Valley second baseman Britten Pond and Notre Dame first baseman Glen Carson are on the first team.

Area second-teamers are Simi Valley right-hander Bill Scheffels, Notre Dame left-hander Chris Leveque, Crespi catcher Casey Snow, Newbury Park shortstop David Lamb and Thousand Oaks outfielder Jamal Nichols.

Basketball

Nathan Schleifer, an assistant at Van Nuys last season, has been named coach at Canoga Park, Athletic Director Bob Marks confirmed.

Track & Field

Derek Favorite of Corona Centennial High, the Southern Section Division II champion in the boys’ 400 meters, has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Northridge.

Favorite has a personal best of 48.21 seconds in the 400 and placed sixth in the state championships.

“We’re happy to have him,” Northridge Coach Don Strametz said. “He’s one of the guys we went after from the get-go.”

Tennis

Bob Bryan of Camarillo was one of six area players to advance to the semifinals of the Southern California Tennis Assn. Junior Sectionals at Los Caballeros in Fountain Valley.

Bryan is playing in the boys 16-and-younger division. Michael Marquez of Ventura and Nicholas Weiss of Tarzana each moved into the boys 12-and-younger semis. Krissy Hamilton of Agoura Hills advanced among girls 18 and younger. Brandis Braverman of Encino and Erin Boisclair of Agoura were winners in the girls 14-and-younger division.

Philip Tseng of Harvard-Westlake High lost in the boys 18-and-younger division and Monique Allegre of Camarillo lost in the girls 16-and-younger draw. All semifinal matches will be played today.
