SPORTSCOPE : Area Volleyball Teams Win Titles

Two South Bay girls’ volleyball teams won United States Volleyball Assn. national age division titles at a tournament last week at UC Davis.

The South Bay Volleyball Club’s 18-and-under team won its division by defeating Mission Valley, 15-3, 15-6, 15-13.

In the 14-and-under division, the Hermosa Beach-based Spoliers defeated Bakersfield, 15-11, 16-14, 15-10, in the title match.

The United States men’s volleyball team will play Brazil at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Forum.

The United States has a 34-21 lead in the series since 1983. Among the national team members is Bryan Ivie, a Mira Costa High graduate and four-time All-American at USC. Ticket prices are $25, $15 and $8.

The Rolling Hills Estates Pepper Tree Foundation will sponsor the 15th annual Tracy Austin tournament Saturday and Sunday and July 17-18 at Ernie Howlett Park and the Jack Kramer Club.

The event is sanctioned by the United States Tennis Assn. and will feature men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

The El Camino College Community Education program is offering a 12-hour sports psychology clinic for coaches and athletes. Sessions run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the first is Saturday.

Preparing mentally for a game, developing concentration on a team and motivating athletes are among the topics. The cost is $45. Information: (310) 793-9703.

The Amateur Athletic Foundation is conducting junior tennis leagues at various South Bay locations through Aug. 14.

The program, for those 8 to 17 years old, is designed to provide underprivileged youngsters an opportunity to play tennis. Each participant will receive 18 hours of instruction, a T-shirt, a certificate of participation and a one-year membership to the USTA, which also includes a subscription to Tennis magazine.

Registration is $10, however, no youth is turned away because of inability to pay. Tennis rackets are provided when needed. South Bay locations include Victoria Park in Carson, Centinela Park in Inglewood and Peck Park in San Pedro. Information: (310) 208-3838.

Loyola Marymount soccer Coach Peter Novakovic will conduct two summer camps at the school.

The camps are open to boys and girls ages 7 to 17 and run from July 19-23 and July 26-30. Players receive lunch daily, a T-shirt and swim time at the Loyola pool. The cost is $200; there is a $50 discount for those who sign up for both camps. Information: (310) 338-7640.
