Rafael Ruelas of Sylmar will fight Darryl Tyson of Washington, D.C. on July 17 in Las Vegas.

The Ruelas-Tyson fight replaces the Oscar De La Hoya-Narciso Valenzuela bout which was postponed Thursday because De La Hoya injured his left hand.

Ruelas, the No. 1 contender in the lightweight divisions of the World Boxing Council and the International Boxing Federation, is 36-1 with 29 knockouts. Tyson is 40-5-1 with 20 knockouts.

“It is a tough fight because (Tyson) has never been (knocked out),” said Dan Goossen, Ruelas’ manager. “Rafael is out to show that not only is he the best lightweight, but that he is the most powerful puncher.”

Jorge Paez will fight Freddie Pendleton on the same card. Ruelas is mandated by the IBF to fight the Paez-Pendleton winner within 90 days. The WBC has mandated Ruelas to fight its champion, Miguel Angel Gonzalez.

Goossen said he will accept the most lucrative of the two bouts.
