SHRINE ALL-STAR FOOTBALL GAME : Five Orange County Players on South’s Roster

Orange County will be represented by five players in the 42nd Shrine All-Star football game, which will be played at 7 p.m. July 24 at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

Trabuco Hills quarterback Pat Barnes, Sunny Hills linebacker Brian Willmer, Los Alamitos quarterback Tim Carey and wide receiver George Sagen and Edison offensive lineman Kyle Murphy will play for the South team, which features 31 of the top graduated seniors in Southern California.

Carey, a first-team selection by The Times Orange County this past season, has the county’s second-best passing yards total for a season with 3,397 in 1992. Barnes, a Times second-team selection, ranks fifth in passing yards for a season with 2,892 in 1991.

Barnes, who is headed for California, ranks fourth in the county in passing yardage for a career (6,182) and Carey, who will play at Stanford, ranks sixth (5,898).

Carey’s 35 touchdown passes last season put him second on the county’s all-time list.

Sagen, a Times’ first-team selection headed for Morehead (Ky.) State, ranks second on the county’s career pass receptions list (174), fourth on the season receptions list (79 in 1992) and tied for fifth on the same list (74 in ‘91). He’s also second in receiving yards per season (1,306 last year) and fourth on the same list (1,033 in ‘91).

Willmer, who doubled as a tight end for the Lancers, was a Times’ first-team pick. He was named the most valuable player of the Freeway League and will attend UCLA in the fall.

Murphy is a 6-4, 255-pounder who is headed for Arizona State. He was a first-team all-county and All-Sunset League selection and second-team all-state.

Practices begin July 16, with the South at Occidental College and the North at Azusa Pacific. The annual visit of the players to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Los Angeles is scheduled for July 20.
