Kiraly and Steffes Win Again : Volleyball: Pair defeat Ayakatubby and Johnson to win at Cape Cod for their 11th tournament title of the year.

Karch Kiraly of San Clemente teamed with Kent Steffes of Pacific Palisades to win the $75,000 Miller Lite Open men’s volleyball tournament Sunday at Cape Cod, Mass.

Kiraly and Steffes, the top-seeded team, beat Scott Ayakatubby of Hermosa Beach and Adam Johnson of San Clemente, 16-14, in the championship game. The winners split $15,000. Ayakatubby and Johnson, the sixth-seeded team, earned $9,000.

Kiraly and Steffes had beaten Ayakatubby and Johnson, 15-10, earlier in the day in the winner’s bracket final. Ayakatubby and Johnson then came back to beat Tim Hovland of Playa del Rey and Bruk Vandeweghe of Beverly Hills, 15-3, in the loser’s bracket final to move into the championship match.

It was the 11th victory in 16 Assn. of Volleyball Professionals events this season for Kiraly and Steffes.

Cammie Ciarelli of Huntington Beach and Holly McPeak of Manhattan Beach won the women’s AVP tournament, also Sunday at Cape Cod.

They beat Rita Crockett of San Antonio and Linda Hanley of Pacific Palisades, 15-10, in the final.

It was the sixth victory of the season for McPeak and the fourth for Ciarelli in the round-robin format.
