SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The South Bay contingent competing in Saturday’s 42nd Shrine All-Star football game at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach dwindled by one.

Stais Boseman of Morningside High, The Times’ 1992 South Bay back of the year, was asked to leave the Shrine camp Wednesday morning after violating training rules, South Coach Mark Paredes said.

Boseman, bound for USC on a basketball scholarship, and Antonio Carrion of Dorsey left Braun Hall at Occidental College on Tuesday evening, where the South team has been training since July 15. The players did not return until 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Players are not allowed to leave camp without permission. Carrion was also dismissed from the squad.

“We were not the only ones that left, but we were the only ones that got kicked out,” Boseman said in Thursday’s edition of the Daily Breeze. “I was getting homesick.

“I came home for about two hours and relaxed, then I went out with my girlfriend and (Carrion) went out with his girlfriend. . . . The first day (of camp) some dudes snuck out. The second day, I was tempted, but I was scared. Then I did it.”

Boseman was expected to play wide receiver and cornerback in the game. He also hopes to continue his football career at USC, but will not be able to do so until 1994 because NCAA rules prohibit freshmen from playing a sport other than the one they signed for.

“It was a real strict thing, but I guess that’s how all-star games are run,” Boseman said. “We couldn’t have radios or TVs in our rooms. Most definitely, I felt like I was in boot camp or something. Every night a lot of people were sneaking out.”

Carrion will attend San Diego State in the fall.

Saturday’s 7 p.m. game, which benefits Shrine hospitals, matches the top players from Northern California against their Southern California counterparts. The South won last year’s game, 38-0, and leads the series, 21-15-5.

Leading the South Bay contingent is James Pepe of Carson, The Times’ 1992 lineman of the year. Also competing will be defensive lineman Sipo’u Mareko of Carson, defensive back Tevita Moala of Hawthorne and fullback Taso Papadakis of Peninsula.

“It’s a great honor to be picked to play,” said Papadakis, who gave up his job at his family restaurant to play in the game. “It’s great to give something back and raise money for the Shrine hospitals.”

All of the area players will continue their playing careers at Division I schools. Papadakis will attend USC, Pepe will enroll at Oregon, Mareko will play at Hawaii and Moala is bound for Brigham Young University.

Paredes, who is the coach of defending Southern Section Division I champion Bishop Amat, called Moala “the most pleasant surprise of camp.”

Horrace (Butch) Cattolico of Los Gatos will coach the North, which has been training at Azusa Pacific.
