Jones Wins SoCal Award 3rd Straight Time

Marion Jones of Thousand Oaks High has been selected the Southern California high school female athlete of the year for an unprecedented third consecutive year by the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles.

Jones, who starred in track and basketball for Thousand Oaks High, was a three-event state champion in track and the Southern Section’s Division I basketball player of the year last season. Jones averaged 22.8 points and 14.8 rebounds a game to lead Thousand Oaks to the final.

She led the Lancers to the Division I title as a junior.

Cheryl Miller of Riverside Poly, who went on to play basketball for USC and the U.S. Olympic team, and swimmer Janet Evans of El Dorado, an Olympic gold medalist, both earned the honor twice.

Golf

Charlie Wi of Thousand Oaks fired a second-round 72 and is one stroke off the lead at the midpoint of the Pacific Coast Amateur championships at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, B.C.

Wi, a Westlake High graduate and former State Amateur champion, is tied with Byron Patton of Beaverton, Ore., and Todd Demsey of Rancho Santa Fe.

Mike Turner of Sherman Oaks (148) and Jim Lundstrom of Mission Hills (152) also made the 36-hole cut. Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys finished at 154 and missed the cut by two shots.

Two area players survived the 36-hole cut and advanced to match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Waverley Country Club in Portland, Ore.

Jason Semelsberger, a 14-year-old from Hart High, shot a six-over 76 to finish the stroke-play portion of the event at 146, good for a share of 12th place.

Chad Wright, 16, of Ventura, rallied with a second-round 73 to leave him at 151, which made the cut by two shots.

After a first-round 73, Darren Angel, 16, of Northridge, shot an 81 and missed the cut by one stroke.

Softball

Former Camarillo High catcher Miki Mangan plans to transfer from Cal State Fullerton to Cal State Northridge. Mangan said she did not like the classes or the softball program at Fullerton.

Teri Rupe, softball coach for Cal Lutheran the past three seasons, has been named coach at Redlands.

Baseball

Chad Nammack, 26, an assistant at Mira Costa High, has been hired to coach the Burbank team. Nammack replaces George Vranau, who resigned in May.
