Wi Slips Into Tie for Fifth After Stumbling In at 74

Charlie Wi of Thousand Oaks shot a one-over-par 74 Thursday and fell into a tie for fifth place with one round remaining in the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, B.C.

Wi is tied at 216 with Byron Patton of Beaverton, Ore., five shots behind leader Randy Haag of Danville, Calif.

Mike Turner of Sherman Oaks shot a 72 to move into a tie for 12th at 220. Jim Lundstrom of Mission Hills struggled, shooting an 81 to fall into last place at 233.

Chad Wright of Ventura and Jason Semelsberger of Newhall were eliminated in the afternoon round of match play in the 46th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Portland, Ore.

Two-time defending champion Tiger Woods of Cypress defeated Wright, 4 and 2, while Grady Girard of Newport, Vt., beat Semelsberger, 3 and 2.

In the morning round, Wright eliminated Erik Ciotti of Barrington, Ill., 4 and 3, and Semelsberger needed 19 holes to oust Randy Leen of Dayton, Ohio.

Elise Kimm of North Hollywood, who graduated from Grant High last month, shot a 76 and finished tied for ninth in the American Junior Golf Assn.’s Betsy Rawls Championship at Hercules Country Club at Wilmington, Del.

Kimm’s 54-hole total of 230 left her 10 shots back.

Basketball

Matt Steffe, a standout basketball player at Hart High, will attend the Air Force Academy’s preparatory school this fall in Colorado Springs, Colo., with hopes of enrolling in the academy next year.

Steffe, a 6-foot-7 swingman, was a Times All-Valley selection and was named the Foothill League’s player of the year while leading the Indians to the league championship. Steffe led the Indians with averages of 21 points and nine rebounds.

Also a skilled golfer, Steffe plans to pursue that sport in college.
