G.C. Marcaccini Signs Italian Basketball Deal

G.C. Marcaccini, a former standout at Notre Dame High and College of the Canyons, has signed a contract to play professional basketball in Italy.

Marcaccini, 20, signed a two-year contract to play for Treviso, near Venice, in the Italian League. He will leave this week.

Marcaccini graduated from Notre Dame in 1991 and redshirted one season at UC Santa Barbara. He transferred to Canyons and averaged 16.6 points a game, ranking among area junior college leaders last season.

Jody Bittner, a senior forward on the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team, has been named the school’s 1993 woman of the year.

Bittner qualifies for the state honor, which will be announced later this month.

Bittner led the 1992-93 Matadors in scoring (10.1 points per game) and minutes (883) and tied for the lead with 10 blocked shots.

She was the only player to start all 27 games last season and is sixth on the school’s all-time list with 56 starts. Bittner averaged 5.6 rebounds a game and made 12 three-point shots.

Golf

Darren Angel and Scott Golditch, both of Northridge, missed the cut in the American Junior Golf Assn. boys’ championship at Irving, Tex. Angel shot a 76 for a two-round total of 151, 10 over par, missing the cut by one stroke. Golditch finished at 152.

Chris Aitkens of Thousand Oaks fired rounds of 79 and 75 to win the Oxnard City Junior Golf Championship, played Monday and Tuesday at River Ridge Golf Course.

All three area players were eliminated in the first round of the USGA girls’ national championships at Costa Mesa.

Nicole Dalkas of Palm Desert eliminated Elise Kimm, Valley Village, 2 and 1.; Shauna Estes of Orangeburg, S.C., ousted Lindy Donnelly of Thousand Oaks, 6 and 4, and Jennifer McCormick of Littleton, Colo., knocked out Jill Kaopua of Oxnard, 2 up.

Baseball

Sixteen area high school players have been chosen to play in the Area Code Games, a showcase for some of the West’s top seniors to be held Aug. 18-21 in San Diego.

The team representing the 818 and 805 area codes, coached by Jody Breeden, includes Crespi third baseman Mike Glendenning, Crescenta Valley utility player Kirk Hagge, Simi Valley third baseman Ryan Hankins, Notre Dame left-hander Rich Igou, Chatsworth shortstop Bryan LaCour, El Camino Real outfielder Justin Martin, Montclair Prep outfielder Ethan Parker, Crescenta Valley left-hander Jim Parque, Harvard-Westlake catcher Jon Schaeffer, Simi Valley right-hander Bill Scheffels, Newbury Park right-hander Keith Smith, El Camino Real left-hander Randy Wolf, Crespi first baseman Brad Wright, Monroe right-hander Joel Zamudio and Sylmar right-hander Carlos Velazco. Montclair Prep outfielder Darrell Dent is the only junior from the area selected for the team.

The team will play an exhibition against a Canadian team Sunday at 11 a.m. at Cal State Northridge.

Chaminade third baseman Brian Powers said he will be an invited walk-on at Arizona.

Royal outfielder Dave Brown has accepted a partial scholarship to play at Nevada. Teammate Gene Strojek plans to walk on at Arizona.

Four area players will play for the Arizona Collegiate League all-star team, which will play a series of five to eight games against teams from other collegiate summer leagues in the next few weeks.

Jacob Cruz, a junior outfielder at Arizona State from Channel Islands High; David Skeels, a junior catcher at Arkansas from Thousand Oaks; Adam West, a sophomore pitcher at Pierce from Thousand Oaks, and Brian Sturges, a catcher from Thousand Oaks who was a freshman last season at Cal State Sacramento, made the team.
