NOTEBOOK : More Than 200 to Tee Off at Junior Golf Championship

More than 200 youngsters are expected to participate this year in Western States Golf Assn.’s 13th annual Junior Golf Championship Tuesday through Friday.

Advanced juniors (ages 7 to 17) will play 18 holes at Griffith Park’s Harding and Wilson golf courses, while intermediates will play nine holes at Griffith’s Roosevelt course.

Beginners tee off at Jack Thompson golf course in Jesse Owens Park, at Western Avenue and Century Boulevard.

Boys and girls are provided with equipment, skills training, instruction in course etiquette, and course play at no charge.

Baseball--The 213-310 Area Code baseball team will conclude practice this week for an all-star game scheduled for Aug. 18-21 at San Diego State University.

The team will play in a round-robin tournament against squads from all states but Alaska, and an Australian national team.

Area players making the team are City Times’ Pitcher of the Year Mark Jones (Crenshaw), shortstop Jose Montenegro (South Gate), third baseman Mark Serria (Crenshaw), and shortstop Wesley Rachels (Loyola).

Football--After a successful goal-line stand to end the first half, the South-West all-stars used two field goals in the fourth quarter to beat North-East, 6-0, in the Chris Mims-Los Angeles Prep Senior Bowl Classic at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach on July 30.
