Wide receiver Haywood Jeffires of the Houston Oilers will sit out Saturday’s exhibition game against the Seattle Seahawks because of an irregular heartbeat, but expects to return for the regular season. Jeffires’ heart rate rose to about 170 beats per minute during Wednesday’s workout and led to a series of tests that revealed an atrial fibrillation, the Oilers said. . . . Offensive lineman Ron Solt of the Indianapolis Colts, injured during an exhibition victory over the Raiders, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder, the ninth operation during his 10-year career. . . . Defensive end Keith McCants was claimed on waivers by the New England Patriots after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. . . . Running back Jon Vaughn, who led the NFL in kickoff returns with a 28.2-yard average last season, was traded from the Patriots to the Seahawks for an undisclosed draft choice. . . . In an exhibition game Thursday night, Jim McMahon completed 12 of 19 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown as the Minnesota Vikings defeated Pittsburgh, 30-13, at Minneapolis. Backup quarterback Sean Salisbury completed seven of 12 passes for 83 yards.
