OUTLOOK: For the first time in years, the attitude around Bell-Jeff practices is positive and with good reason. The Guards won four of six games during a stretch in 1992 and bring back Pawlik, who was an all-league quarterback as a sophomore. “The attitude has changed,” Woodlief said. “Last year we played some teams on our level and our guys found that we can win some football games.” The Guards have a legitimate shot at a winning record and a playoff spot in 1993.

St. Genevieve

FAST FACT: Torres, the Valiants’ leading returning rusher, gained just 142 yards in 35 carries last season.

OUTLOOK: The last few years have been miserable for St. Genevieve football, but the Valiants begin the 1993 season with a one-game winning streak. A 20-0 victory over Cathedral was Fong’s first at St. Genevieve. The hopes for this season are relatively high because of Muller’s improvement over the summer. Muller passed for 1,277 yards last season, but also threw 23 interceptions. The offensive and defensive lines should be better this season. St. Genevieve may have too far to go to slide into the playoffs.
