Irvine seemed to have it all last year, and it showed.

The Vaqueros were 13-1 and won their second consecutive Southern Section championship after rolling through the Sea View League with a 7-0 record. They played only one game that was decided by a touchdown or less, a 40-34 victory over unbeaten Santa Margarita in Week 6.

At the time of that showdown, Irvine had one preseason loss, 10-0 to Mission Viejo, but had three shutouts in its first five games and had allowed only 27 points. Santa Margarita had outscored opponents, 189-30, in the first five games. The Vaqueros’ average margin of victory through its next eight games was 20.8 points, including a 30-8 victory over Newport Harbor in the Division IV title game.

Irvine and Newport Harbor also met during the regular season, and Irvine scored a 28-17 victory--one week after its victory over Santa Margarita.

Newport Harbor (11-3, 5-2) and Santa Margarita (9-3, 5-2) finished tied for second in the league race.

Irvine’s Scott Seal was the league’s offensive player of the year, rushing for 1,476 yards, averaging 6.5 yards per carry and scoring 21 touchdowns.

Santa Margarita’s Brian Finneran was the county’s top receiver with 62 catches.

Irvine linebacker Ryan Jones and Newport Harbor lineman Beau Ralphs shared the defensive player of the year award.

How’s this for league strength? Three teams reached the Division IV semifinals, including Corona del Mar (8-4-1, 3-3-1). Tustin (4-6, 3-4) didn’t make the playoffs but beat the Sea Kings, 23-14, and lost by 10-0 scores to Irvine and Newport Harbor.
