Laguna Beach’s Wood Topples Bolsa Grande

Pat Wood passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more as Laguna Beach beat Bolsa Grande, 34-6, in a nonleague football game Friday at Bolsa Grande.

Wood, a senior, had touchdown passes of 27 and 44 yards in the first half as the Artists opened a 21-0 lead in the season-opener for both teams.

Wood was five of 12 with two interceptions and 134 yards.

His first touchdown pass was to wide receiver Gordon Orsborn with three minutes 18 seconds left in the first quarter.

Wood connected with Garrett Chesley on a 44-yard pass play for a touchdown with 5:02 left in the first half. The play started as a screen pass to the left side, but Chesley was able to avoid Bolsa Grande defenders as he ran down the sideline for the touchdown.

Wood, working out of the option, kept the ball for two touchdown runs in the third quarter. The first was a 40-yard dash off tackle that put Laguna Beach ahead, 27-0, with 5:24 left.

Nathan Cross, a Laguna Beach linebacker, set up the final score with a interception he returned 20 yards to the Bolsa Grande 18. Laguna Beach intercepted three passes in the game.

Wood went around the corner for an 18-yard touchdown run on the next play after Cross’ interception. Liam McDonagh scored Laguna Beach’s other touchdown on a six-yard run late in the second quarter.

Bolsa Grande avoided a shutout when quarterback Brian Baughman scored on a one-yard dive with 3:32 left to play.
