PREP ROUNDUP : Brea-Olinda’s Matthews Scores in Sudden Death

Eric Matthews scored from about eight meters 20 seconds into sudden death to give Brea-Olinda a 9-8 victory over Santa Ana Valley in a nonleague water polo game Tuesday at Brea.

The score was tied, 7-7, at the end of regulation and Brea went ahead, 8-7, on a goal from Tucker Lowe at 1 minute 54 seconds into overtime. Santa Ana Valley’s Freddie Rodriguez tied it with 38 seconds left in overtime, forcing sudden death.

Lowe and Tad Murphy had three goals each for Brea. Rodriguez scored four goals for Santa Ana Valley (3-2).

In other nonleague water polo:

Laguna Beach 7, Santa Margarita 6--Wade Garlin and Brent Reynard, two of Santa Margarita’s starters, were in a car accident Tuesday and suffered minor injuries but are expected to return later in the season. Steve Ferguson, a freshman, made his first varsity appearance and had six saves.

Trabuco Hills 7, Mission Viejo 4--Brian Martz had three goals and Charles Makki had two for host Trabuco Hills (1-0). Jarrod Gatzke had eight saves for Trabuco Hills.

Sunny Hills 17, El Dorado 5--Eric Hyon scored five goals and Seann Schiele had four for visiting Sunny Hills (2-0).

Esperanza 10, Tustin 9--Tustin rallied for four goals in the final quarter to get close but visiting Esperanza held on. Tom Valterria and Marshal Bauerfiend scored two goals each for Tustin.

Canyon 19, Los Amigos 6--Aaron Harries had eight goals and Jad Davis and Jeff Hamilton had four goals each for host Canyon (4-1).

In nonleague tennis:

Newport Harbor 12, Los Alamitos 6--Newport Harbor’s Lindsay Olson won, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3, and the freshman duo of Emily Barker and Katie Canright swept their doubles matches, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, for Newport Harbor (2-0).

Brea-Olinda 10 Sonora 8--Nicole Miller and Angie Smith of Brea-Olinda paired up the first time to win, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Woodbridge 12, El Toro 6--Liz Adcock and Ali Tenerelli swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, for host Woodbridge (2-0).

Laguna Beach 14, Edison 4--Visiting Laguna Beach won in this rematch of last year’s Division II semifinal.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Trabuco Hills 3, El Modena 2--Holly Falkenhagen had 23 kills and Whitney Uhl added 20 as Trabuco Hills won, 16-18, 15-2, 15-13, 9-15, 15-12.

Capistrano Valley Christian 3, Aliso Niguel 0--Host Capistrano Valley won, 15-10, 15-5, 15-2, for its 28th consecutive victory.

Newport Harbor 3, Huntington Beach 0--Misty May had 26 kills, three aces and six digs as Newport Harbor defeated host Huntington Beach, 15-3, 15-11, 15-7.

Irvine 3, Capistrano Valley 1--Irvine (1-1) won their home opener over Capistrano Valley (1-2), 15-12, 3-15, 15-9, 15-10.

Edison 3, University 2--Lindsay Dablow had 13 kills for visiting Edison in a 13-15, 15-12, 13-15, 15-4, 15-6.

Ocean View 3, Cypress 2--Julie Adams had 25 kills for Cypress but Ocean View won, 14-16, 15-8, 15-9, 9-15, 15-13.
