Two new coaches of San Gabriel Valley high school football teams began their seasons with victories and two others continue their hunt.

Jack Allen, who replaced Jim Brownfield at Muir, guided the Mustangs to a 16-6 victory over traditional City Section power Banning. Andy Boynton, who replaced Bob Rau at Duarte, guided his team to a 28-6 victory over Canoga Park.

Bill Thompson of South El Monte is still looking for his first victory. Cantwell Sacred Heart defeated South El Monte, 21-0. David Estrada, the new coach at Pasadena Poly, is also hoping for a victory after his team’s 23-20 defeat against Brentwood, the top-ranked team in the Eight-Man Large Division.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Mt. San Antonio College football team plays host to Riverside Saturday night after opening its season with a 32-20 victory over Orange Coast.

Running back Leonard Green caught five passes for 123 yards and carried 16 times for 54 yards for the Mounties. Mark Butler returned two punts for 107 yards, including a 74-yard return for a touchdown.

Mt. SAC quarterback Cody Lee Smith completed 21 of 32 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

Three Pasadena City College football players have been suspended for at least one game because they were ejected during the Lancers’ 29-25 loss to Fresno City College.

Running back Jesse Swayze, defensive back Thad Culpepper and linebacker John Evans, all of whom start, will miss Saturday’s game against Fullerton.

Evans was ejected for his role in a bench-clearing brawl during the third quarter. Swayze and Culpepper were ejected for their roles in separate incidents.

Citrus College will be looking for its first victory Saturday against L.A. Southwest. Citrus lost its opener against Glendale, 20-16.

Citrus fullback Aaron Meschuck gained 93 yards in 12 carries for the Owls, who gave up the game-winning touchdown on a 47-yard pass play.

COLLEGES

The Pomona Pitzer football team, fresh from its 30-28 season-opening victory against Macalester (Minn.), travels to Redlands on Saturday for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. game against the three-time defending champion Bulldogs.

Pomona running back Tony Fudulu gained 150 yards in 16 carries and scored three touchdowns against San Diego. Redlands defeated Menlo, 17-10.

Claremont and La Verne will be looking for their first victories when they meet in a SCIAC opener Saturday at La Verne.

Claremont’s losing streak was extended to 20 games last week in a 24-3 loss at Trinity College in Texas. Claremont quarterback John Shipp passed for 77 yards and rushed for 24.

La Verne lost its opener to San Diego, 30-28. La Verne quarterback Ryan Campuzano completed 17 of 31 passes for 274 yards.

Azusa Pacific plays its second consecutive nonconference game against a member of the SCIAC when the Cougars travel to Occidental Saturday night.

Azusa Pacific lost its opener to Cal Lutheran, 10-9. The Cougars had a 9-0 lead and failed to score four times when they were inside Cal Lutheran’s 30.

Azusa Pacific fullback Bill Zernickow rushed for a game-high 66 yards in 12 carries. James Dixon gained 59 yards in 19 carries and scored a touchdown on a one-yard run.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s volleyball team will participate in the nine-team Cal State Dominguez Hills tournament this weekend.

Pomona improved its record to 6-2 by defeating Humboldt State, Sonoma State and San Francisco State at a tournament last weekend at UC Davis. The Broncos’ only tournament loss was against Chico State.

Allison Thompson of the Cal Poly Pomona women’s soccer team is one goal shy of the school’s career mark of 30 set by Shannon Payne.

Thompson scored her first goal of the season last week in Pomona’s 3-0 victory over Northern Colorado and scored two in Tuesday’s 5-0 win over Azusa Pacific (2-3-1). Tanya Ferguson and Thompson have both scored a team-leading three goals for Pomona (4-1).

The Golden State Athletic Conference, of which Azusa Pacific is a member, will sponsor intercollegiate women’s soccer for the first time this season. Southern California College added women’s soccer this year, giving the conference four programs, including Westmont and Cal Baptist.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Miguel Meriwether, West Covina-- Meriwether, West Covina’s quarterback, connected on touchdown pass plays of 34 and 75 yards and rushed for two touchdowns in West Covina’s 55-7 victory over Don Lugo.

Meriwether gained 95 yards in seven carries and completed five of eight passes for 154 yards. He also kicked three extra points.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Tony Fudulu, Pomona Pitzer--Fudulu, a running back, gained 150 yards in 16 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Sagehens to a 33-13 victory over Macalester College.

Fudulu figures to be a marked man Saturday night when Pomona Pitzer plays three-time defending SCIAC champion Redlands.
