Ice Steps Down as Crossroads Baseball Coach

Chuck Ice, the dean of Westside prep baseball coaches, has resigned as Crossroads baseball coach to concentrate on his duties as the school’s athletic director.

Ice, 46, has coached 20 years on the Westside, including the past 12 at Crossroads. He started at St. Monica in 1974 and coached three seasons. He also coached at Santa Monica from 1978-1981.

At Crossroads, Ice had a 211-95-1 record and 25-9 playoff record. The Roadrunners have made four appearances in Southern Section finals, winning championships in 1985 and 1987.

Bill Keep, 25, Crossroads junior varsity coach the past two seasons, will replace Ice. Keep played first base at Culver City from 1983-1986 and was named to the 1986 Southern Section team. He also played at Harbor College and Cal State Dominguez Hills. Keep’s assistants will be former Culver City players Juan Cueva and Neil Glickman.

Sixty-four volleyball teams are scheduled to compete Saturday in the Venice Backyard Championship on the 900 block of Harding Ave in Venice.

The first match begins at 7 a.m.

The tournament was started in 1983 by Denny Lennon, Mike Boehle and Ray Castro in the back yard of Lennon’s house, the cousin of the Lennon sisters.

Jimmy Lennon Jr., the boxing announcer, will be the master of ceremonies.

All proceeds will be donated to St. Mark’s Elementary School in Venice.
