Loyola Volleyball Team Plays Iowa to Open Tournament

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team will play in the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo tournament this weekend.

The Lions (5-3), ranked 23rd nationally by Volleyball Monthly, will open tournament play against Iowa at 5:30 p.m. today. On Saturday, Loyola will play Boise State at 10:30 a.m. and San Luis Obispo at 7:30 p.m.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s volleyball team (2-7) will play host to the Toro Invitational today and Saturday at the school gym.

Cal State L.A., Humboldt State, California Lutheran, Hawaii-Hilo, Cal State Stanislaus, Cal Poly Pomona, Biola and Cal State Hayward will participate in the tournament, which begins at 3 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday.

A four-person beach volleyball tournament will be staged Sunday at Redondo Beach’s Seaside Lagoon to benefit the Richstone Family Center, a child abuse treatment program.

Pro beach volleyball players scheduled to compete include Scott Ayakatubby, Adam Johnson, Dennie Knoop and Elaine Roque. The round-robin tournament will begin at noon. Admission is $5.

The Yonex U.S. Open Championship badminton tournament will begin Tuesday at Loyola Marymount.

More than 140 players representing 15 countries will compete in the tournament, which is sanctioned by the International Badminton Federation and the U.S. Badminton Assn. There will be five categories, including men’s and women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles. Tickets range from $10 to $25 and are available at Ticketmaster.

The Southern California Slo-Two-Pitch Softball Assn. is seeking teams for tournaments for the fall season program at Wilson Park in Torrance.

The entry fee is $190 a team. Each team is guaranteed to play at least three games in each tournament. The deadline is Oct. 16. Information: (310) 866-8685.

The third International Naginata Federation Goodwill tournament will be staged Sept. 25 at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Competitors from eight countries will participate in the event, which begins at 10 a.m. at the Toro gym. Naginata is a Japanese martial art that employs the use of a pole arm with a single curved blade on one end. Admission is free.

The City of Inglewood Recreation and Community Services Department is sponsoring youth soccer for boys and girls ages 6 to 13 and flag football for boys and girls 6 to 11.

Registration begins Monday and ends Oct. 2 at Centinela, Darby and Rogers parks. The registration fee is $20 for residents and $24 for non-residents. Games will be played at Centinela Park.

The City of Torrance Parks and Recreation Department will offer flag football for boys in kindergarten through eighth grade beginning Oct. 16 through Dec. 16.

The league is open only to boys who live in Torrance or attend a Torrance school. Registration is Saturday and Sept. 25 at the Torrance Parks and Recreation office, 3031 Torrance Blvd. The fee is $35.
