ROUNDUP : Maranatha Spikes L.A. Baptist

Darlene Avolio and Michelle Samura each had 16 kills to lead Maranatha High to a 15-3, 16-14, 13-15, 15-12 Alpha League volleyball victory at L.A. Baptist on Tuesday night.

Maranatha came into the game ranked sixth in Southern Section Division V, one spot ahead of L.A. Baptist.

Bethany Ishida had 43 assists for Maranatha (7-1, 1-0), which rallied from a 12-5 deficit in the second game.

Darcie Frazier had 17 kills and Tune Hrotko had 39 assists for the Knights (3-4, 0-1).

In other girls’ volleyball matches:

Poly d. Birmingham, 15-12, 10-15, 1-15, 15-6, 15-13--Gisela Dhenino had 22 kills to lead the Parrots in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Birmingham.

Poly (3-1, 1-1) took a 13-2 lead in the final game before a Brave rally fell short.

Wendy Huezo had 20 kills to lead Birmingham (4-1, 1-1).

Saugus d. Burbank, 13-15, 15-9, 15-6, 15-5--Amy Gillis served for 20 points and Laura Wagoner had 51 assists to lead the Centurions (4-0, 2-0) to a Foothill League victory at Burbank. The Bulldogs are 0-2 in league play.

Providence d. Holy Martyrs, 15-3, 15-8, 15-0--Shannon Martin had 11 service aces and 18 assists to lead Providence in its Liberty league opener. Amy Kubasakamy led Providence with eight kills.

Bishop Montgomery d. Chaminade, 15-12, 14-16, 11-15, 15-4, 15-10--The Eagles (6-3, 3-1) lost a Mission League match despite Shawnte Mitchell’s 24 kills and Katy Bloodgood’s 53 assists. Bishop Montgomery is 3-1 in league play.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Ventura 18, Valley 5--Pedro DeLima scored six goals and Chris Gallaudet added four to lead the Pirates in a Western State Conference opener at Ventura.

Goalie Paul Krueger had 10 saves for Ventura. The Pirates (13-6, 1-0) broke the match open with six goals in the second quarter and poured it on with five more in the fourth. Bruce Park scored two goals for Valley (2-9, 0-1).
