MANHATTAN BEACH : Blaze Wipes Out 2 Downtown Stores
Manhattan Beach fire officials say a blaze Sunday in the city’s downtown commercial area did $500,000 worth of damage, wiping out two businesses and a vacant storefront.
The fire, which was reported at 5:35 p.m., is believed to have started in the attic of Manhattan Toy & Variety, 1108 North Manhattan Ave., and then spread to the adjoining businesses in the same building.
Flames destroyed the building, which also housed Los Machos, a Mexican restaurant, and a vacant store.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Only the outside walls of the building remain standing, according to fire officials, who said the roof collapsed during the blaze.
