Newport Harbor’s Wade Tift rushed for 209 yards, scored two touchdowns, kicked a 20-yard field goal and an extra point in the Sailor’s 23-7 victory over Tustin. The senior had not played in the last three games because of a separated shoulder.

LATE HEROICS

Costa Mesa’s Bryan Luxembourger kicked two field goals in the final 37 seconds to give Costa Mesa a 39-36 victory over Laguna Hills. Cory Sides’ interception and 22-yard return set up Luxembourger’s game-winning 28-yard kick with 17 seconds left. Luxembourger also had an interception.

ON THE RECORD

“When we opened the school we had no music, so we adopted the Notre Dame fight song. But we have a new band director this year from USC, and he refuses to play just Notre Dame songs.”

--Monsignor Michael Harris, principal of Santa Margarita, whose football team takes the field to “Conquest.” The “Notre Dame Victory March” is played after Eagle touchdowns.

BIG MONEY

Most booster clubs have 50-50 fund-raising drawings during home games. Typically, the winner splits $100 to $200 with the school. Friday night at Newport Harbor, Trent Harris split a $20,000 pot with the school. In conjunction with homecoming celebrations, the school ran a special 50-50 event. Two-hundred participants paid $100 each for a chance at the winnings.

SURF CITY, HERE WE COME

When the public address announcer asked fans to rise for the national anthem before the Huntington Beach-Fountain Valley game, the Huntington Beach band began to play the Beach Boys’ oldie “Barbara Ann.”

PLAYING IN PAIN

Despite playing on a bum ankle most of the night, Kennedy wide receiver Wes Morris caught three passes for 53 yards, including a 37-yard reception on a screen pass that set up the Fighting Irish’s second touchdown.

“Wes is such a great athlete, he’s better at 70% than most people are at 100%,” Kennedy Coach Mitch Olson said. “He was in pain, you could see it.”
