Six County Players to Be in Volleyball Tournament

Steve Timmons of Newport Beach and Adam Johnson of Capistrano Beach are among six Orange County volleyball players competing in the Great Western Team Cup tournament, which begins Thursday at the Forum.

Timmons, a three-time Olympian and two-time gold medalist, is captain of Team Toyota, which also includes pro beach stars Dusty Dvorak of Laguna Beach and Brian Lewis of Corona del Mar.

Johnson and former Edison High standout Dan Hanan will play for Team Coca-Cola, captained by Pacific Palisades’ Kent Steffes, the leading money winner on the beach tour last season with partner Karch Kiraly of San Clemente.

Alan Knipe, a former Marina High standout and Golden West men’s volleyball coach, will play for Team Paul Mitchell.

The four-team, round-robin tournament is made up of pro beach and former national team players.

Nov. 4--Team Toyota vs. Volleyball Monthly; Paul Mitchell vs. Coca-Cola. Nov. 10--Paul Mitchell vs. Volleyball Monthly; Coca-Cola vs. Toyota. Nov. 17--Coca-Cola vs. Volleyball Monthly; Toyota vs. Paul Mitchell. Dec. 3--(7:30 p.m.) Third-place vs. fourth-place; first-place vs. second-place.
