PREP ROUNDUP : Santiago Wins Three-Team Cross-Country Meet

Frank Hernandez and Ben Mejia tied for first place with a time of 15 minutes 50 seconds for three miles to help Santiago to a cross-country victory in a Garden Grove League tri-meet against Bolsa Grande and La Quinta Monday at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

Santiago beat Bolsa Grande, 15-48, and La Quinta, 15-49, to finish 7-0 in league. Santiago beat La Quinta, 15-49. The league meet will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday at Mile Square Park.

In other Garden Grove League boys’ cross-country:

Garden Grove 22, Rancho Alamitos 38, Rancho Alamitos 19, Los Amigos 44, Garden Grove 18, Los Amigos 45--Mike Baldares of Garden Grove won in 16:21 on the three-mile course at Mile Square Park. Garden Grove is 6-1 in league, losing only to Pacifica.

Pacifica 24, Kennedy 31--Doug Miner won in 16:53 for Pacifica at Mile Square Park.

In boys’ Sunset League cross-country:

Edison 22, Fountain Valley 35, Edison 16, Westminster 43, Fountain Valley 23, Westminster 34--Adam Diebert of Edison won the three-mile race in 15:57 at Edison High School.

In Garden Grove League girls’ cross-country:

Pacifica 15, Kennedy 50--Stacey Young cruised to victory in 22:07 for Pacifica at Mile Square Park. Stacey Harker was second in 22:19 for Pacifica, which finished 7-0 in league.

Garden Grove 23, Rancho Alamitos 35, Rancho Alamitos 20, Los Amigos 41, Garden Grove 18, Los Amigos 42--Suzy Choi won the three-mile race in 20:30 for Rancho Alamitos. Erin Nelson was second in 20:52 for Garden Grove.

Santiago 17, Bolsa Grande 42, Santiago 15, La Quinta 50, Bolsa Grande 15, La Quinta 50--Karla Rojas won in 20:48 over three miles for Santiago.

In the Orange League girls’ tennis tournament:

Gonzales wins singles title--Jenny Gonzales of Valencia won the singles title with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Rachel Buenviaje. Renee Williams and Jessica Wilson of Valencia beat Elizabeth Kasma and Beth St. Clair of Brea-Olinda, 6-1, 6-1, for the doubles title.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 18, Century 0--Melissa Gilbert and Melissa Miller swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 16-5 this season for host Laguna Hills (7-9, 5-4). Century is 2-15, 0-9.

Laguna Beach 14, Estancia 4--For Laguna Beach (9-0, 16-3), Amanda Hastings-Phillips, won, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6. In doubles, Ashley Smith and Tara Kunert swept, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6.

Santa Margarita 18, Tustin 0--Santa Margarita (12-8, 7-7), swept its match against Tustin (0-14). Katie Leatherby swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, Megan Scalon and Jessica Pierog swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 15, Irvine 3--Marcie Asch won, 7-6, 6-1, 6-0, for host Corona del Mar (16-3, 12-2), which finished second in league.

Woodbridge 15, Saddleback 3--Natalie Exon swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, as Woodbridge (16-4, 11-3) clinched third place and a playoff berth.

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 14, El Toro 4--Laura Ruben of Mater Dei (13-3, 7-2), swept, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0. Ruben is 48-0 this season. Cheri Ota and Sarah Jarrett, who are undefeated in doubles in the South Coast League, swept, 6-3, 6-0, 6-1.

Capistrano Valley 13, San Clemente 5--Ashley Taylor swept, 6-2, 6-4, 7-5, for Capistrano Valley (6-10, 3-6). In doubles, Tia West and Des Herzer swept, 7-6, 6-3, 6-1.

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 15, Ocean View 3--Nina Basica swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-4, and Stephanie Hu and Kirsten Olsen won in doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for Fountain Valley (9-5, 9-8).

Edison 18, Santa Ana 0--Edison (17-2, 14-0) lost only two games in nine singles sets at Santa Ana.

In South Coast League water polo:

El Toro 9, Capistrano Valley 2--The Stoll brothers lead El Toro (22-2, 4-0), which is ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Division I poll. Brent Stoll had five goals and Greg Stoll had eight saves for the Chargers.

In nonleague water polo:

Western 12, Cerritos Gahr 5--Chris Cummings scored five goals and Bryon Verne had three for host Western (14-7).
