Joe Montana will not play in the Kansas City Chiefs’ game Monday night against the Green Bay Packers, Coach Marty Schottenheimer said.

“Dave Krieg will start,” Schottenheimer said Wednesday.

Montana, who has appeared in only half of the 28 quarters the Chiefs have played, last week re-injured a hamstring that he hurt Oct. 3. Montana sat out practice Wednesday and the Chiefs signed rookie quarterback Alex Van Pelt to their practice squad.

Montana was off crutches, but limping noticeably. Schottenheimer would not speculate on how long he might be sidelined.

Rod Bernstine, the Denver Broncos’ leading running back, strained his right calf at the start of practice and sat out the rest of the workout.

Bernstine, who has rushed for 340 yards in 99 carries, will be examined again today to determine the extent of the injury.

A new four-year $8.9-million contract negotiated between the Houston Oilers and defensive lineman Ray Childress reportedly is being rejected by the NFL.

The Houston Chronicle, quoting a league source, reported that the NFL will not approve the deal signed Sept. 3 because it includes a right-of-first-refusal clause. Such a clause is not valid unless a player’s contract has expired. When Childress signed, he had a year remaining on his current pact.
