Edison overcame a two-set deficit against Villa Park to even the match and prevail on games, 75-65, in a Division II second-round girls’ tennis match Saturday at Edison High.

Edison (19-2) moved on to play Marina in the quarterfinals Tuesday. The Chargers won the schools’ two previous Sunset League meetings.

Kelly Foster’s ace closed out her final set against Sarah Curry, 6-3, letting Charger Coach Amy Beard breathe a sigh of relief knowing Edison had tied Villa Park, 9-9, and that her team was well ahead in games.

“This is what happens when your team goes to homecoming and stays out until 4 in the morning,” Beard said early in the match, when the third-seeded Chargers were two sets behind.

A turning point came midway through the match, when the Chargers’ No. 3 doubles team of Tiffani Jue and Jennifer Takamine defeated Villa Park’s No. 2 team of Susan Shaw and Karen Chau, 6-3, giving the pair two consecutive victories.

At that point, Edison’s top two singles and doubles players had gone winless and Villa Park led, 7-5.

But No. 2 singles player Brooke Lacey won, 6-3, and the No. 2 doubles team of Lindsay McAndress and Nicole Kojima followed with a 6-0 victory to even the match, 7-7.

Faye DeVera then posted her third consecutive victory for Villa Park, and Edison’s top doubles combination of Michelle Turner and Tami DeMaree won their final set. Then all eyes were on Foster and Curry.
