COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Wins Twice, Reaches Volleyball Final

Top-ranked Golden West defeated Foothill, 15-7, 15-3, 15-6, Saturday to advance to the championship match of the College of the Sequoias women’s volleyball tournament.

Golden West (17-0) will play either Kings River, which it defeated in a quarterfinal, 15-2, 15-3, 15-9, or College of the Sequoias.

Jaimie Torromeo led the Rustlers with 13 kills and Venessa Dahl added 11.

Against Kings River, Heidi Emmrich and Becca Foltz had nine kills a piece.

In the third-place game of the Southern California Championships water polo tournament:

Orange Coast 14, El Camino 11--Shad Wicker led the Pirates (21-4-1) with eight goals. Orange Coast will play in the State championships next Saturday.

In the semifinals of the Lassen men’s basketball tournament:

Irvine Valley 138, Lassen 102--Lakis Pantazis, a sophomore transfer from Saddleback, led Irvine Valley with 29 points in Reno, Nev. Tom Airey added 27 points, including eight three-pointers. Irvine Valley will face Sacramento today for the championship.

In the Barstow men’s basketball tournament:

Cuesta 91, Cypress 77--Charles Thomas led Cuesta with 22 points to help his team to third place. Jeff Cummins had 19 points for Cypress (1-2).

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Saddleback 78, Mira Costa 62--Derrick Walsh scored 22 points, and Sean Warren added 13 to lead Saddleback in its season opener.

In the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo men’s wrestling tournament:

Rancho Santiago second--The Dons scored 60 1/4 points to 79 1/4 for first-place Fresno.

Shane Hollway (126 pounds), David Niedringhaus (167) and Nayif Abdullah (177) took second for Rancho Santiago.

In the Chaffey women’s basketball tournament:

Orange Coast 84, College of the Desert 46--Leann Kazmer had 24 points and 12 rebounds in a consolation game for Orange Coast (1-1). Flo Luppani added 13 points.
