DIVISION II TENNIS : Krum’s Victory Helps Edison Reach Final

Share

Edison junior Susie Krum saw Los Angeles Marlborough on the draw sheet for Thursday’s Southern Section Division II semifinals, but she wasn’t sure what to make of the Mustangs.

“I had no clue about them,” Krum said. “I didn’t know what the outcome might be.”

As it turned out, Krum had plenty to do with the outcome, a 10-8 Edison victory. Krum lost her final two sets at No. 3 singles, but her 6-4 first-set victory against second-seeded Marlborough’s No. 3 player Shireen Naderin proved to be the difference.

“I just try to get all I can,” Krum said.

On Tuesday against Marina, Krum didn’t get anything. She lost all three of her sets.

“I was thinking about Marina and what my coach (Amy Beard) told me to do differently,” Krum said. “I concentrated on staying on my front foot.”

Third-seeded Edison’s 20th victory in 22 matches sets up a rematch with top-seeded Laguna Beach, which beat the Chargers 14-4 early in the season.

“We’ll be there,” Beard said. “We’re not laying down for them either. It will be tough.”

Since the teams met two months ago, Beard has made a lineup change, inserting her No. 1 singles player, Nicole Kojima, into No. 2 doubles and moving Kelly Foster from No. 2 doubles to No. 1 singles. Foster won two of three sets Thursday; Kojima and her doubles partner, Lindsay McAndress won all three of their sets.
