PAYING TRIBUTE

On their way to their first-round game against La Verne Damien, Santa Margarita players and coaches stopped off to pay tribute to their friend and teammate, Darren Wedertz.

Wedertz, who suffered a head injury in a game last November and was later diagnosed with leukemia, sat in his wheelchair on the lawn of his Mission Viejo home while the Eagle players performed cheers and presented him a hat, sweat shirt, team photo and the game ball from last week’s victory over Newport Harbor.

“It was absolutely wonderful,” Darren’s mother, Charlene, said. “Darren was so excited, he kept saying, ‘Go SM! Go SM!’ ”

THE STREAK IS DEAD

Mater Dei, which hadn’t defeated a Marijon Ancich-coached team since 1966, put an end to that drought with a 17-14 victory over Santa Fe Springs St. Paul in the first round of the Division I playoffs. St. Paul won 14 consecutive games in the series from 1967-80, when the teams were in the Angelus League. Ancich picked up two more victories over the Monarchs in 1989 and ‘90, when he coached at Tustin.

ON THE RECORD

“Our kids are excited about playing Los Alamitos. I think we’ll give them a closer game than most teams have given them so far.”

--Dave White, Edison coach, on the second-round Division II matchup.
