OUTLOOK
While Shanahan acknowledges that his team is a dark horse, he still believes the Lobos could surprise some people. Especially if his No. 1 player, Zavala, can get some support and continuity from her teammates. “If the team gels, then we could have an excellent team,” Shanahan said. Last year, Zavala was the team’s MVP and earned honorable mention in the league. Zavala, a 5-foot-5 junior point guard, averaged 10.4 points and 4.7 rebounds, made 14 three-pointers and was 61.7% from the free-throw line. Though the Lobos are not overloaded with returning starters, Shanahan said he hopes three returning varsity players--Sandoval, Nguyen and Mora--will give the team some much-needed experience. As for height, the Lobos just don’t have it. Newcomer Apanel, who plays center, is the tallest player at 5-11. With no height to speak of, Shanahan said speed and aggressiveness are the keys. But the coach is still optimistic. “We should be improved enough this year that we at least end up in the middle of the pack,” he said. “But our goal is to make the CIF playoffs.”
