OUTLOOK

Although the Pioneers return only two starters, Flores definitely has high hopes for the team. Last season the Pioneers won their first postseason game ever, beating Fullerton in a Division III-AA qualifying game, but lost to eventual champion Inglewood Morningside in the first round. This season Flores looks to all-league selection Christensen and Rojas to step into leadership roles. Sheets is back after sitting out last season, and will add much needed height down low. Newcomers Williamson and Siefken have improved tremendously over the summer, according to Flores, and should compete for a starting spot. The Pioneers will get speed and versatility from Manliguis and Ratajczak, who played on last year’s 16-4 junior varsity team. “We do lack experience,” Flores said. “If we develop early, we’ll be good. We need to get some experience up front.” Flores hopes the tough nonleague schedule will prepare the team for league play. He said goals for the season are to break the school record of 17 victories set in 1987, and advance further in the playoffs than last year. “We are not going to roll over anybody,” Flores said. “We can’t play a half-court game. We will play in-your-face pressure defense.”
