HIGH SCHOOL FOOTTBALL PLAYOFFS : Carson Gets to the Points in Big Win : City Section: Colts roll up 61 points in smashing Garfield. Defending 4-A champion Sylmar is Carson’s opponent next week.

Carson High may have entered the City Section 4-A Division football playoffs with banged-up bodies and bruised egos after a challenging regular-season schedule, but the Colts did plenty to erase the pain with a 61-14 victory over host Garfield Wednesday night in a quarterfinal playoff game.

Carson (8-4), which has won 10 City major division titles, will play Sylmar (10-1-1), a 34-7 winner over Venice, on Dec. 3. Top-seeded Sylmar beat Carson in last year’s 4-A title game. Garfield finished 10-2.

The Colts, who qualified for the playoffs for a record 24th consecutive season, scored the most points in a playoff game since the school opened in 1964. The school record for most points in a game came in an 80-0 victory against University in 1977.

“The kids have a different attitude this time of year,” Carson Coach David Williams said. “They want to erase some of the early hurts that we had and we want to win.”

The Colts had their best offensive game of the season with 248 yards rushing and 252 yards passing. The defense held Garfield to 103 yards.

Colt running back Robert Johnson gained 124 yards and scored two touchdowns in 11 carries and John Houston had 83 yards and three touchdowns in seven carries.

Carson receiver Joseph Redmond scored touchdowns on a four-yard run, on a 49-yard punt return and a 46-yard pass from quarterback Ramon Rogers.

Rogers completed 11 of 14 passes for 214 yards.

Garfield standout tailback Armando Figueroa gained 36 yards and scored a touchdown in seven carries.

“We had no mistakes,” Williams said. “Finally. It wasn’t easy. We’re going to have some sore guys tomorrow.”

The Colts made it look easy from the start. Johnson scored on a 39-yard run during the fourth play of the game.

Garfield then let the ensuing kickoff bounce untouched and Carson defensive back Daks Blanks recovered the ball at Garfield 26-yard line. Three plays later, Redmond scored his first touchdown on a four-yard run and the rout began.

Carson led, 34-7, at halftime and 48-7 at the end of the third quarter.
