HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS : Defense Leads Los Alamitos Past Fountain Valley, 42-21
Los Alamitos forced five turnovers, including four interceptions, to defeat Fountain Valley, 42-21, Saturday night in a Southern Section Division II semifinal at Cal State Fullerton.
Three of the turnovers led to points, including a 99-yard interception return by Brad Melsby, which gave the second-ranked Griffins a 28-7 halftime lead.
Mike Good passed for 203 yards and one touchdown and ran for three touchdowns for Los Alamitos (13-0), which reached the title game for the third consecutive season and increased its winning streak to 34 games.
No. 15 Fountain Valley finished 10-3.
No. 12 Irvine 42, Glendora 21--Quarterback Mike Phelps and running back Sean Clark combined for the bulk of the offense for Irvine (12-1) before 4,200 in a Division IV semifinal at Mt. San Antonio College.
Phelps ran for three touchdowns and threw for one and Clark scored twice. Glendora finished 9-2-2.
Anaheim Savanna 20, Placentia Valencia 0--Mike Flores returned the second-half kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown to lead unseeded Savanna to an upset victory in a Division VI semifinal at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.
Savanna (11-2) forced five turnovers and held Valencia (11-2), the two-time defending Division VI champion, to 206 total yards.
Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 23, La Palma Kennedy 19--Mike Fikes rushed for 136 yards and linebacker Isaac Marin returned an interception for a touchdown to lead the Mustangs (12-1) in a Division VII semifinal at Western High.
Fikes, playing in only his second game since transferring from Victor Valley High a year ago, set up both of fullback Phil Fonua’s short touchdown runs. Marin’s 39-yard interception return for a touchdown gave Mira Costa a 20-6 lead with 10 minutes to play.
Kennedy is 11-2.
Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills 42, Laguna Hills 20--J.C. Pintsak completed 14 of 19 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns as Trabuco Hills (10-3) defeated its Pacific Coast League rival in a Division VIII game at Mission Viejo High.
