PREP ROUNDUP : Marina Girls Win Soccer Tournament

Cassie Campbell scored two goals to lead Marina to a 4-1 victory over El Dorado in the championship game of the Cerritos girls’ soccer tournament Monday.

Campbell was named most valuable player of the tournament.

Megan Orach and Tera Donnegan scored the other goals for the Vikings (8-0). The Vikings’ Marcy Crouch and Jenny Benson were also named to the all-tournament team.

Liz Levens, an all-tournament selection, scored El Dorado’s goal.

In another Cerritos tournament game:

Mater Dei 2, Lakewood St. Joseph 0--Chrissy Whalen and Deanna Ceballos scored in the first half to give the Monarchs (5-3) the victory in the consolation final. Ceballos was named to the all-tournament team.

In the Hacienda Heights Wilson girls’ soccer tournament:

Fullerton 3, West Covina 0--Deborah Hargrave scored two goals and Kiki McAulay one for Fullerton (6-4-1), which will play San Marino in a semifinal today.

Katella 6, Aliso Niguel 0--Jillian Bressler scored three goals and Lisa Kornely two as Katella won the quarterfinal. Katella will play South Pasadena in a semifinal today.

In the Brea-Olinda boys’ soccer tournament:

Sunny Hills 1, El Dorado 0--Davis Lee scored five minutes into the game to help Sunny Hills beat El Dorado (3-1-2). In another pool-play game, Andy Volpp had two goals in a 5-0 victory over the Long Beach Wilson JV. Sunny Hills is 6-3-1.

In the Simi Valley Royal boys’ soccer tournament:

Capistrano Valley 3, Ridgecrest Burroughs 0--Steve Braud scored to help the Cougars advance to today’s quarterfinals. Braud also scored in Capistrano Valley’s 2-1 first-round victory over Granada Hills.

In the Riverside Poly boys’ soccer tournament:

Mater Dei 4, San Bernardino Aquinas 0--Kevin Quigley had two goals for the Monarchs. Quigley also scored a goal for Mater Dei (7-0-1) in a 2-1 victory over Temecula Valley.

Canyon 3, Indio 0--Clay Kilbarger scored twice for Canyon (5-1-1) in a consolation game. Brent Nogle scored two goals for Canyon in a 4-3 victory over Apple Valley earlier Monday.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

El Toro 2, Villa Park 1--Deiter Segura scored with two minutes remaining after a crossing pass from Jose Lopez to give visiting El Toro (4-1-2) the victory.

Segura was credited with an assist on a goal by Joe Karlan that tied the score with 10 minutes left in the first half.

Chris Miller scored early in the game for Villa Park (3-2-3). Sean Taeger had 10 saves for El Toro; Sean Bartko had five for Villa Park.

In the Ayala boys’ basketball tournament:

Liberty Christian 84, Templeton 79--Dave Vaccaro had 27 points and 11 rebounds and Bob McClung added 23 points for Liberty Christian (1-6) in a consolation-round game.

In the Encinitas San Dieguito boys’ basketball tournament:

Santa Margarita 67, Oakland Fremont 59--Brian Finneran had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Brendan Mulligan had 14 points, Brian Scoggin 14 and Brad Finneran 13 for Santa Margarita, which will play San Marcos in the championship game at 7 tonight.

Mingus (Ariz.) 68, Newport Harbor 67--The Sailors led by 11 in the fourth quarter before Mingus rallied. Newport Harbor trailed, 68-65, with 18 seconds remaining when Paul Tayyar missed a three-point shot and Rami Shoukry got the rebound and scored a two-pointer.

In the Villa Park girls’ basketball tournament:

University 53, Buena Park 25--Senior forward Jennifer Stanley had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Trojans.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

San Clemente 66, Trabuco Hills 54--Shawna Waldner had 21 points and eight rebounds and Michelle Macintyre had 12 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for host San Clemente (7-2).

Valencia 57, La Mirada 48--Cindi Judd had 17 points and Jamie Snaveley had 15 for visiting Valencia (4-4).
